Summer 2023

The 2023 LAMM Outreach is an intensive six or seven week research opportunity for selected students beginning with notification of acceptance in early May and concluding with a presentation of research finding in late July. 

March 15 and following: Interested individuals (Middle & High School Students, Teachers, Staff, Undergraduates and Grad students) should register in Cvent (cvent.org)

April 15 and following: Interested middle and high school students can submit an application directly to (shattuck@mit.edu) Please note: Preference will be given to returning students who will be continuing previous research and to new applicants in the UNITE-identified demographic. 

May 15 and following: (Research week 1) Selected candidates will be notified of their acceptance and can meet virtually with a supervising teacher to define research topics, identify team partners, begin conducting background research, start drafting a research protocol, and identify needed and available resources. Written deliverables are to be submitted no later than June 15. Upon approval by the cooperating teacher, materials and equipment will be prepared to facilitate research in June. Original research will be conducted in June and July after which results will be presented in poster format.

July 10 (Monday) (Research week 5)

July 17 (Monday) (Research week 6) Prepare poster of findings, present to entire lab July 19; pack and prepare materials for continuing investigation and celebrate on July 20. 

July 23 (Sunday) – July 27 (Research week 7) Teams presenting 2022 research in Minneapolis will participate in the 5-day international technical conference. Presentation materials should be prepared for shipment by July 17.

In addition to research and group meetings, the program will include weekly guest speakers, lab visits, and Field trips.

Project Focus 2023

Each participant should work on one or more project teams. Moreover, everyone should be familiar with the objectives of each team and may be asked to help with their work. Several research topics have been proposed. Some were started in previous years; others are new. Participants should feel free to propose additional ideas to pursue. So far, the list includes:

  9. 3D Printing of Regolith
  10. Spider Silk Structural Reinforcement
